Managing Anxiety

What Can Anxiety
Look Like?

  • Shoulda-Coulda-Woulda– you cannot stop reliving, regretting, and second-guessing the past
  • Fear of What If… – you’re so worried about the future that you agonize over making decisions; you’re terrified you’ll make a mistake
  • Hamster Wheel– your thoughts just keep going round and round, just like a hamster on a wheel going nowhere. You can’t seem to calm down your brain
  • Danger Zone– you’re always on edge and/or never calm; you feel that danger is always around the corner
  • Compulsive Rituals– you cannot feel calm unless you repeat certain rituals and/or phrases (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD)
  • Hijacked Body– you experience, sweating, difficulty breathing, chest pain, your heart racing, and/or muscle tension: your doctors assure you that “nothing is wrong”
  • What Sleep? – you battle with insomnia or recurring nightmares

How Can New Pathways
Counseling Help?

What you’re going through is exhausting!  I will tailor your sessions based on your symptoms, your goals, and your experiences to help you find calm as quickly as possible.

This Usually Involves:

  • Teaching calming techniques during our first few sessions so you experience some immediate relief
  • Discover the source of your anxiety
  • Recognize and heal triggers from past events
  • Learning new behaviors or thought processes

What Techniques Do You Use?

Usually, the deeper work involves a combination of four that have been scientifically proven to minimize – if not eliminate – many forms of anxiety:

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
  • Mindfulness Therapy
  • Somatic Awareness techniques
  • Eye Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy
